UGC Scholarships 2021 / Fellowships List : Application, Eligibility, Amount : To promote education and encourage deserved candidates to pursue higher education, every year University Grant Commission (UGC) provides financial assistance to a number of students across the country. In order to achieve the goals of central and state governments, UGC provides various scholarship schemes for students through financial assistance to meritorious students of colleges and universities.
UGC has taken initiatives to support underserved sections of society in pursuing higher studies. Students who are meritorious and those who deserve the financial aid to continue their studies can avail themselves of UGC scholarships. UGC continuously supports students in their education and compensates for direct costs of education and encourages them to study in financial hardships.
About UGC
University Grant Commission (UGC) is a Statutory Body of the Indian Government with its head office at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi. UGC was established in November of 1956 by an Act of Parliament. The main aim of UGC is to coordinate, determine and maintain the standards of university education in India. UGC executes its functions by controlling the allocation of Funds, Grants, and Aid to the Central and other Universities and Higher Learning Institutes throughout India.

UGC provides various scholarships for the students at the university level, these scholarships are meant for meritorious students and students to belong to the backward classes such as SC/ST. 1. Post-Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child
The Government of India started this scholarship to support the post-graduate education of single girl children as a means to empower them. The aim of this scholarship is to compensate for the direct costs of education for the students who are only girl children in their family. In a way, it is also an attempt to recognize the value of small family norms.
Application Period
The students will be able to apply online for the Post-Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child between the months of October and November.
Number Of Slots
There is no limit on how many applicants are selected for the Post-Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child.
Eligibility Criteria
Only those students who fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria as mentioned below should apply for the scholarship
- The applicant must be a single girl child of her family
- She must have taken admission in Master’s Degree course in a recognized university
- Only 1st year students will be eligible for this scholarship
- The applicant should not be pursuing Post Graduation course in distance education mode.

2. Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Scholarship for Research in Social Sciences (SVGC)
SVGC scheme of UGC has been introduced keeping in mind the idea of Swami Vivekananda for women’s education. The main objective of this scheme is to support the cost of education of single girl children and promote a single girl child in society. By giving the benefit to the families who have only a single girl child, UGC is also promoting small family norms and acceptance of the female child in our country.
Application Period
The application process for the Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Scholarship for Research in Social Sciences (SVGC) will remain open between the month of December and January. The students will be able to apply online during this period.

The number of applicants selected for the Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Scholarship for Research in Social Sciences (SVGC) varies each year according to the number of applications.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for this scheme of UGC the applicant must fulfil the below-mentioned eligibility criteria
- The applicant must be a single girl child of her parents
- She must not be more than 40 years of age and if she belongs to the SC/ST/OBC and PwD category then she must not be older than 45 years
- The applicant should be pursuing Ph.D. in Social Science from a recognized University/College or Institute
- If the applicant is pursuing Ph.D. in distance education, she will not be eligible for the scholarship
- The transgender students are also eligible to apply for this scholarship

Students have to apply for Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Scholarship for Research in Social Science (SVGC) on the official website of the UGC @ www.ugc.ac.in/svsgc/.
Amount Of Scholarship
The beneficiaries of the SVGC scholarship will get the financial assistance as mentioned below
- The students selected for Fellowship will get Rs. 25,000/- per month for 2 years and Rs. 28,000/- per month for remaining tenure.
- Contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per annum for the first 2 years and Rs. 20,500/- for remaining tenure will be given to the students
- People with Disabilities (PwD) will receive Rs. 2,000/- per month for escort and reader assistance.
3. Post Graduate Scholarships for Professional Courses for SC/ST Candidates
UGC has introduced this scheme to uplift the students belonging to the SC/ST category. The aim of this scheme is to provide the students of the SC/ST category a chance to accomplish their goals and to promote Professional education among the SC/ST category students and society.
Application Period
The online application form for Post Graduate Scholarships for Professional Courses for SC/ST Candidates will become available during the months of October and November on the National Scholarship Portal website.
Number Of Slots
Only 1000 applicants out of all the students who applied for the ‘Post Graduate Scholarships for Professional Courses for SC/ST Candidates will be selected to receive the benefits.
Eligibility Criteria
Before applying for the scholarship, the students must check if they fulfil the prescribed eligibility criteria or not
- The student must belong to the Scheduled Tribe or Schedule Cast (ST/SC)
- The student must be enrolled in the first year of professional course
- Only those students who are pursuing professional courses recognized by MCI, NCTE, Bar Council of India, RCI, NCTIS, DCI, PCI, AICTE, Development Authority of India, Forensic Regulatory, INC and ICAR, will be able to apply for the scholarship
How To Apply Online?
The application to avail of the benefits of the Post Graduate Scholarship for Professional Courses for ST/SC candidates can be filled by the eligible students at the National Scholarship Portal @ scholarships.gov.in/ under the “UGC Schemes” tab.
Amount of Scholarship
Students who score 60% or more marks will get Rs. 5,000/- per month and those students who score less than 60% marks will receive only Rs. 1,000/- per month for 2 years.
4. Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holder (URH)
Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holder (URH) is awarded to the students who have secured high rank in their university examination at the undergraduate level. The objective of awarding this scholarship is to encourage the students to pursue a Master’s Degree. This scheme also promotes talented students and rewards them for their outstanding performance.
Application Period
In the month of October and November students who want to apply for the Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holder (URH) will be able to fill the online application form.
Number Of Slots
3000 students will receive the benefits of the ‘Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holder (URH)’ scheme each year.
Eligibility Criteria
The minimum eligibility criteria to apply for this scheme of UGC are as mentioned here. Only the students who fulfil this criterion can apply for the scholarship
- The applicant must not be older than 30 years at the time of taking admission in the post-graduation course.
- The applicant should be pursuing Post-Graduation in regular and full-time mode. He/she should not be a distance education student.
- He/she must be pursuing Post Graduation degree in any one of the following disciplines – Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences, Commerce, and Language.
- In order to become eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must score at least 60% marks in graduation.

All the students who find themselves eligible for Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holder (URH) can apply for the scholarship on the National Scholarship Portal @ scholarships.gov.in/. They will find the application form under the “UGC Schemes” Tab.

Students who get financial aid under this scheme of UGC will receive a sum of Rs. 3,100/- per month for 2 years (10 months a year).
5. “Ishan Uday” for North Eastern Region (NER)
Ishan Uday scheme of UGC is introduced with an aim of promoting higher education in the North Eastern Region of the country. This scheme enables the students of the North Eastern Region who belong to the economically weaker sections, to pursue their higher education, without any burden of the cost associated with it. This scheme specially focuses on the professional education of the North Eastern Region students and seeks to increase the enrolment ratio in the region.
Application Period
Students who want to apply for the “Ishan Uday” for North Eastern Region (NER) scholarship will be able to do so from the months of October and November.
Number Of Slots
10,000 students will be selected as the beneficiary of the “Ishan Uday” for the North Eastern Region (NER) scheme of UGC.
Eligibility Criteria
Following is the minimum eligibility criteria that all the students who are interested to apply for this scholarship of the UGC should fulfil
- The applicant must be a resident of North Eastern Region and have passed class 12th exam from a school situated in the North Eastern Region
- He/she must have taken admission in general degree course or technical and professional degree course in a recognized college/university or institution
- The applicant must be a first year student
- The annual income of the applicant’s family must not exceed 4.5 lakh
How To Apply?
All the eligible students who want to avail of the benefits of the “Ishan Uday” for the North Eastern Region (NER) should visit the National Scholarship Portal @ scholarships.gov.in/ between the months of October and November and fill the online application form. The application form will be available under the “UGC Schemes” tab.
Amount Of Scholarship
Students enrolled in a Technical or Medical degree course will be given an amount of Rs. 7,800/- per month. The students who will be pursuing any other degree will receive a scholarship amount of Rs. 5,400/- per month.
Note: Students will have to renew this scheme for each year of his/her degree.
UGC Scholarship Application and Allotment Process
All the interested students can apply for the UGC Scholarships through the online application process. First, the student has to apply online for the scholarship then wait for the result and finally, if selected, they will get the amount of scholarship.
Online Application
First students have to check if they are eligible to apply for the UGC scholarship. If eligible, visit the UGC website @www.ugc.ac.in/ugc_schemes/ and select the appropriate scholarship scheme. They will find the apply link near the scheme. They have to complete the online application process either on the UGC website or on the National Scholarship Portal @ scholarships.gov.in/ (depends on the scheme selected by the student).

Documents Needed To Apply For UGC Scholarship
The applicant will need the following documents in order to fill the online application form for UGC scholarship
- Aadhaar card
- Mark sheet of the previously passed exam
- Cast/category certificate
- Income certificate
- Certificate of enrolment in the degree or post-graduation course
- Bank passbook etc.
UGC Scholarship Result
After receiving all the applications, UGC will scrutinise the application forms of all the students. Then it will make a shortlist of the students based on the application of the students and recommendation from the Expert Committee set up by the UGC. Once the shortlist will be created, UGC will upload it on its website and applicants will be able to see it by logging in using their registration id and password.

- Enter your registration id, Password, Date of birth, Email id
- And enter the code which will be displayed in an image

Disbursement Of UGC Scholarship Amount
Candidates shortlisted by the UGC will receive the amount of scholarship through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The amount will be deposited directly into their bank account. Applicants will not receive any amount in cash, by check or any other means.
Renewal Of UGC Scholarship
The renewal time of UGC scholarship is different for every scheme. The scholarship of the students will have to be renewed each year. For this purpose, students should be monitored by the head of the department and the students have to submit their progress report to the designated branch of a nominated bank. This progress report should bear the signature of the head of the institution. If a student fails to submit his/her progress report as prescribed, their scholarship will not be renewed.

1. National Fellowship For OBC Candidates
UGC has started this fellowship scheme to improve the condition of students belonging to the OBC category. Under this scheme, students pursuing higher education like M.Phil. or Ph.D. are provided financial assistance. Through this scheme, students can pursue their higher education without financial burden.
Number Of Fellowships
There is a total of 300 fellowships available under this scheme of the UGC.
Eligibility Criteria
The following criteria are to be fulfilled by anyone who wants to apply for this fellowship
- They must have passed their Post Graduate examination
- The annual income of the applicant’s family should not exceed Rs. 6.0 lakh
- He/she must be admitted to M.Phil. or Ph.D. course
- The applicant must belong to the OBC category
- Transgender people can also apply for this fellowship
Benefits Of Fellowship
Students selected for this fellowship program will receive the following benefits
- They will get an amount of Rs. 25,000/- per month for the first 2 years
- After two years they will receive Rs. 28,000/- per month
- Students of Humanities and Social Science will get a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per year for the first 2 years and after that they will receive Rs. 20,500/- per year
- Science, Engineering, and Technology students will receive Contingency grant of Rs. 12,000/- per year for 2 years and after that they will get Rs. 25,000/- per year
- The people with disabilities (PwD) will get Escort and Reader assistance allowance of Rs. 2,000/- per month
2. National Fellowship for Persons with Disabilities
This scheme of UGC was initiated to help the students with disabilities by providing them with the opportunity to pursue M.Phil. and Ph.D. level education. Since its inception in 2012, this scheme is providing financial assistance to thousands of disabled students who are pursuing research degree and enhance their career prospects not only at the national level but also at the international level.
Number Of Fellowships
Only 200 applicants will receive the fellowship under this scheme.
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must be a Person with Disabilities (PwD)
- He/she must have been admitted for M.Phil. / Ph.D. in a recognized university or academic institution
Benefits Of Fellowship
Following benefits will be available for the candidates selected under this scheme
- Fellowship amount of Rs. 25,000/- per month for 2 years will be given to the candidates
- They will receive Rs. 28,000/- per month after the period of 2 years
- Students of Sciences, Engineering, and Technology will get contingency grant of Rs. 12,000/- per year for the first 2 years, after that they will receive Rs. 20,500/- per year for 3 years
- Contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per year will be provided to Humanities, Social Science and Commerce students for first 2 years, after that Rs. 20,500/- per year will be given to them for three years
- Departmental assistance allowance of Rs. 3,000/- per year
- Reader Assistance/ Escort allowance of Rs. 2,000/- per month will also be provided to the students
3. Post-Doctoral Fellowship to Women Candidates
This scheme is meant to help the women candidates who are unemployed by providing them with the opportunity to carry out advanced studies and research. The aim of this fellowship scheme is to improve the talent of the unemployed women candidates by providing them with the financial assistance they need to carry out research and studies at the advance level.
Number Of Fellowships
Each year 100 women are selected to be the beneficiaries of this fellowship scheme of the UGC.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be a Ph.D. degree holder
- The age of the applicant should not be more than 55 years as on the last date of submission of application
- Applicant must have scored at least 55% marks at Under Graduate level and 60% marks at Post Graduate level
- The applicant should be unemployed
- Transgender candidates can also apply under this scheme
Note: Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PwD category will get relaxation of 5 years in upper age limit and 5% relaxation in the minimum required marks.
Benefits Of Fellowship
Following benefits can be availed by the selected candidates under this fellowship scheme
- They will receive Rs. 38,800/- per month for 2 years
- After 2 years they will get Rs. 46,500/- per month
- A contingency grant of Rs. 50,000 per year for 5 years will be provided to the candidates
- Escort and reader allowance of Rs. 2,000/- will be given to the people with disabilities
4. National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students
The candidates from Scheduled Caste can avail this fellowship to pursue higher studies at M.Phil. and Ph.D. level. The financial benefits are provided for a period of 5 years under this scheme of the UGC. 3% of the total number of fellowships are reserved for the People with Disabilities (PwD) candidates of SC category.

This fellowship is provided to 2000 students from Scheduled Caste each year by the UGC.

- Candidate must be admitted to M.Phil. / Ph.D. course
- He/she should belong to the SC/ST category

5. Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minority Students
This scheme is open for the candidates who belong to Muslim, Christian, Parsi, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist communities (minority communities). Under this scheme, UGC provides financial assistance to the students to pursue higher studies at M.Phil. / Ph.D. level in the field of Humanities, Science, Technology, Social Science and Engineering.

- The student must be registered for full time and regular M.Phil. /Ph.D. course in any university or institution

Benefits Of Fellowship
The student selected under this fellowship scheme will be eligible to receive the following benefits
- Reader assistance and escort allowance of Rs. 2,000/- per month is available for people with disabilities
- Contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per year will be given to the Humanities, Social Sciences and Commerce students for the first 2 years, after 2 years the grant will increase to Rs. 20,500/- per year for 3 years
- Students of Science will get Rs. 12,000/- per year as contingency grant for first 2 years, after that they will receive Rs. 20,500/- per year for 3 years
- Fellowship of Rs. 25,000/- per month will be provided for first 2 years to the students
- After two years they will get Rs. 28,000/- per month
6. National Fellowship for Higher Education of ST Students
UGC provides this fellowship to the students who belong to the Scheduled Tribe category. The aim of this scheme is to encourage students from the ST category to acquire higher education and enable them to pursue Ph.D. and M.Phil. courses in Humanities, Social Sciences, Technology and Science.
Number Of Fellowships
Every year UGC provides 750 fresh fellowships to the ST students from all over the country.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must have passed Post Graduation level examination
- He/she should belong to ST category
- The applicant should be registered for full-time regular Ph.D./M.Phil. course from a UGC recognized university or institution
Benefits Of Fellowship
The benefits under this scheme of the UGC are as follows
- People with disabilities will get escort and reader assistance allowance of Rs. 2,000/- per month
- Science, Engineering and Technology students will be given a contingency grant of Rs. 12,000/- per year for first 2 years and Rs. 25,000/- per year after 2 years
- Contingency grant for Humanities and Social Science students will be Rs. 10,000/- per year for the first 2 years and after that it will be Rs. 20,500/- per year
- The fellowship amount that the students will receive will also be changed after 2 years. For the first two years, they will get Rs. 25,000/- per month and after that they will get Rs. 28,000/- per month
7. Post-Doctoral Fellowship to SC/ST Candidates
To encourage the members of the backward and deprived sections of our society to engage in the advance studies and research in Engineering, Science and Technology, UGC provides this fellowship. The candidates selected under this scheme will get the opportunity to undertake research in the field of Technology, Science, Engineering, Social Sciences and Humanities.
Number Of Fellowships
100 students get selected for this fellowship scheme every year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must have a PhD degree
- The maximum age limit is 50 years for the male candidates and 55 years for the female candidates
- The candidate must be unemployed
- He/ she should belong to SC or ST category
- Applicant must have scored at least 50% marks at Under Graduate level exam and 55% marks at Post Graduate level exam
Benefits Of Fellowship
Following benefits are available for the candidates who are selected under this scheme
- Contingency Grant of Rs. 50,000/- per annum will be provided to the candidates
- Fellowship amount of Rs. 38,800/- per month will be given to the candidates for the first 2 years
- After 2 years the amount of fellowship will increase to Rs. 46,500/- per month
- People with Disabilities (PwD) will get escort and reader assistance allowance of Rs. 2,000/- per month
8. Emeritus Fellowship
This scheme is operated to provide opportunities to the teachers who have been engaged in the work of research and teaching programs. The main aim of this scheme is to provide the teachers with the means by which they can focus on their research without worrying about the financial aspects of doing it.
Number Of Fellowships
There are total of 200 fellowships available under this scheme, 100 are for Science Stream and 100 are for Humanities, Languages, and Social Sciences.
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must have done quality research and have published his/her work
- The teacher (awardee) can work under this scheme up until he/she reaches the age of 70 or for the period of 2 years (whichever is earlier)
Benefits Of Fellowship
The teachers selected under this scheme will receive the following benefits up to 2 years
- Contingency grant of Rs. 50,000/- per year will be provided to them
- They will also receive an amount of Rs. 3,1000/- per month for two years
9. Raman Fellowship for Post-Doctoral Research for Indian Scholars in USA
The aim of this fellowship scheme is to create an opportunity for international collaboration in research. The candidates who participate in this type of collaborative research will develop a new perspective that will help them with their research. This type of collaboration also opens the door for forging long term relationships with distinguished experts in their fields.
Number Of Fellowships
Only 300 teachers are selected under this scheme of the UGC.
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must not be older than 40 years of age
- Applicant must be a permanent teacher at any university or institution recognized by the UGC
- He/she must have done independent research work and have it published in a peer-reviewed journal
- Applicant must have Ph.D. degree in Humanities, Social Science, Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Natural Science, or Technology
- He/she must have scored minimum 60% marks in Post Graduate examination
Note: 5 years age relaxation is given to the applicants of reserved category, and female candidates.
Benefits Of Fellowship
The applicants selected under this scheme will have to work in the United States of America for a period of 12 months, during this period they will receive the following assistance
- A contingency grant of up to Rs. 50,000/- will be provided to the candidate to cover the expenses of travel, visa, medical insurance etc.
- They will receive 3000 USD per month for the period of the fellowship, i.e. 12 months
- To travel within the United States, a travel allowance of $600/- will be given for up to 6 months and after 6 months the allowance will increase up to $1200/-
10. S. Radhakrishnan Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Humanities and Social Sciences
UGC provides this fellowship scheme to encourage people to carry out research and advance studies in the field of Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages in India. By providing the financial assistance needed for the study and research, UGC creates an opportunity for the candidates to do research and study into these subjects. This fellowship is open to all the candidates who are willing to apply for it.
Number Of Fellowships
UGC provides the benefits of this scheme to 200 candidates each year.
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must be below 35 years of age
- They must be unemployed
- Applicant must have scored 55% marks in Under Graduate level exam and 60% marks in Post Graduate level examination
- Transgender candidates can also apply
Note: Relaxation of 5 years in upper age limit will be given to the SC/ST/OBC/Women/PwD candidates. The candidates of SC/ST/OBC/PwD category will also get relaxation of 5% in minimum required marks.
