JEE Main exam date for January 2023 session is out. Before knowing JEE Main exam date 2023, you must aware of JEE Main exam pattern for Paper-1 (B.E. / B.Tech.) & Paper-2 (B. Arch / B.Planning). JEE Main exam pattern 2023 will include everything right from the mode of JEE Main exam to marking scheme. Therefore, understanding each thing is necessary for JEE Main aspirants. JEE Main exam for January 2023 session will be organized as well as conducted by a newly established but very prominent organization named as ‘National Testing Agency [NTA]’ in the month of January 2023. JEE Main exam 2023 will be conducted in more than 200 cities / towns of India. It will be a national level entrance test for engineering aspirants.
From 2023 onwards, NTA will conduct JEE Main exam twice a year. JEE Main 2023 first attempt will be held in January and the second attempt will be held in April of 2023. Engineering aspirants can appear in both JEE Main exams. However, only the best JEE Main scores will be considered as a candidate’s final scores.
JEE Main 2023 scores will be used for admissions to UG engineering courses at IITs, NITs, SFIs, CFTIs, state engineering colleges for participating states and other participating institutions.
JEE Main Exam Pattern 2023
JEE Main exam 2023 will consist of two question papers
- Paper 1 will be conducted for B.E. / B. Tech. programmes
- Paper 2 will be conducted for B. Arch / B.Planning (At Institutions other than IITs)
JEE Main exam 2023 aspirants are free to appear for any one or both of the papers. Further details are given in the table below:

All the candidates who have registered for JEE Main exam 2023 will have to appear for any one or both of the papers as per their choice of papers made while filling up the JEE Main online application.
On the other hand, the language of JEE Main question papers shall be Hindi / English / Gujarati and should be selected by aspirants at the time of filling JEE Main online application form. Paper 1 & Paper 2 both will be held in online mode [Computer Based Test] except for Drawing Test – Part III of Paper 2.
JEE Main Exam Pattern Paper 1
- JEE Main Paper 1 will be strictly conducted in online mode i.e. a Computer Based Test [CBT].
- Paper 1 will have 90 objective type – multiple choice questions [MCQs] from Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics [30 MCQs from each subject].
- The exam duration will be 3 hours. Each MCQ will be of 4 marks which means Paper 1 will be for a total of 360 marks.
- For each correct answer, a candidate will get 4 marks but for each wrong answer, a candidate will lose 1 mark due to the provision of negative marking. However, no marks will be deducted for unanswered questions.

JEE Main Exam Pattern Paper 2
JEE Main Paper 2 will be for B. Arch/ B.Planning programmes at institutions other than IITs. Paper 2 shall have three parts. The total time duration to solve all three parts will be 3 hours.
- Part 1 – Mathematics – Will be held in online mode [CBT] and have 30 Objective Type – Multiple Choice Questions [each of 4 marks]. Total marks will be 120. 4 marks will be awarded for each correct answer and 1 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
- Part 2 – Aptitude Test – Will be held in online mode [CBT] and have 50 Objective Type – Multiple Choice Questions [each of 4 marks]. Total marks will be 200. 4 marks will be awarded for each correct answer and 1 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
- Part 3 – Drawing test – Will have two questions of 70 marks to be answered on the drawing sheet.
Entire Paper 2 will have 82 questions [80 MCQs & 2 questions to test candidate’s drawing aptitude] of total 390 marks. Negative marking will be applicable only for MCQs.
